Throughout this unit I have learned about nutrition and where our food comes from. I have also learned how the body processes food. I did not have much background in nutrition prior to this unit.

During our first field trip we bought two items total from 2 local grocery stores. We were then asked to analyze all the ingredients of one of the items. As I was doing so,  I realized I had not heard of over half the ingredients. This opened my eyes to what is really in the food I am putting in my body. This field trip taught me to thoroughly read the ingredients in a product.

After learning about the ingredients in common foods, we learned how those foods move through our body in the digestive system. We were able to demonstrate this with common household items. I think this was the most beneficial lab in the unit because it was the foundation for the rest of the curriculum. This was a helpful lesson because it was very hands-on.      We also read the novel Omnivore's Dilemma. This novel was very dense and hard to read (I am not going to lie). Once I was able to adapt to the writing style, I was able to understand the book clearly. This novel is about the author's journey to follow a bushel of corn from the farm to our plates. I would have never guessed corn was evident in so many foods!

This unit opened my eyes to the things I was putting in my body and where they came from.
