5-10-17: TKAMB Discussion Questions

1. Why does Scout feel shame during the pageant? What happened?

  • She feels shame because she feel asleep and missed her cue to enter the stage, and Mrs. Merriweather yelled at her for "ruining" the pageant


2. How does Harper Lee build suspense as the kids walk home? What writing techniques does she use in this chapter to create suspense?

  • She builds suspense by having the kids stop and listen, and how Scout can hear the person's behind them's pants and shoes


 3. In the struggle, there are small clues about who attacked the kids? What clues does Harper Lee give the reader about their attacker before his identity is confirmed?

  • He has scruff, cotton(cheap) pants, he smells like whiskey


 4. What happened to Jem in the struggle? What happened to Scout? What happened to their attacker?

  • Jem broke his arm
  • Scout's costume got broken and she got scraped up
  • The attacker got stabbed in the rib cage


 5. Who saved the kids? Why is this ironic?

  • A countryman(Boo Radley) saves the kids
  • Ironic because the ids used to be so afraid of him, and then he saves them
