Unit 4: Social Media–Reflective Assessment

Simon Mainwaring said, “Social media is not about the exploitation of technology but service to the community.” This quote reminds of this last unit in NEW School where we learned how to use different platforms of Social Media professionally.

In Science, we have been learning about immunization. This topic was very interesting because we hear so many bad claims about vaccines that we were able to determine if these claims were true or not. We learned about the immune system, blood, and vaccines. We did one lab this unit called the Blood Lab. In this lab, we learned about antigens on red blood cells. After reading the background and the procedures of the lab, we performed the lab where we tested a team member’s blood and looked for clumping which determined her blood type. Because I have been so sick for the past 3 months, I was able to relate to it very well.

In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, we went back to the depression era in Maycomb, Alabama. This book contrasted the two worlds of back then and now. Between learning how to manage social media and technology to reading about a simple lifestyle with no technology shows the development of technology within the past 100 years. Throughout this novel, I took sketchnotes on Google Drawing. I like to annotate through this visual representation of the novel.

Our entire final project revolved around social media and technology from the websites we built to the videos we made. I loved being able to use my creativity with this project in building my website. I made it through Wix.com and I was able to customize any part I liked. For one of my videos, I experimented with GoAnimate to create an informational animated video. I loved working on this video because it was as if I was telling a story which I then got to bring to life. I chose to make a flipped classroom video similar to the videos we watch in core for my second video!

This past year in NEW School has taught me that I can find new ways to get work done that excite me and make me eager to do the work. I will miss the free-flow environment of the core as I move on to the Pre-Med core. I will always remember the valuable things I learned that I can take will me to be successful in life.

5/4/17: TKAMB discussion questions

What stage do you believe Mayella Ewell is at? What stage should she be at?
Mayella Ewell is at the Adolescence stage which is identifying Identity vs. Role Confusion and peer relationships. She should be at the Young Adult stage identifying Intimacy vs.Isolation and love relationships.

How do the themes race, education and wealth surface during the court scene? Do you think the court scene would have been different is Mr. Ewell was wealthy or educated? If so, what does that say about our justice system? Are there prejudices in the justice system?
The court is segregated and few are educated and wealthy. If Bob Ewell was educated and wealthy this trial most likely would not have happened. There are prejudices in the justice system. Most people believe Bob Ewell because he is white.

Is Mayella Ewell like her father or different from him? In what ways?
Mayella is similar to her father because neither really no what they are supposed to do. I think Mayella is trying to prove to the town that the Ewells are more than the town perceives them to be.

How does Atticus use Mr. Ewell’s literacy to build his case?
Atticus makes Mr. Ewell seem ignorant and uneducated which makes him harder to believe.

How does Dill react to Mr. Gilmer’s questioning of Mr. Robinson?
Dill starts crying which could foreshadow the change in society to accepting people of color.

TED Talk: Amy Cuddy: Your Body Language Shapes Who You Are

I think the TED Talk: Amy Cuddy: Your Body Language Shapes Who You Are, is one of the most popular TED Talk videos for two main reasons. The first reason is because the speaker Amy Cuddy´s tone is very casual which allows the audience to feel comfortable with her. However, her tone is formal enough to have authority. The second reason is that her slide presentation had many visual examples which made it easy for visual people to relate and understand.

Environmental Unit Reflection

This past unit in N.E.W. School was about the environment. We have learned valuable skills in science, english, and in technology.

In Science class one thing we focused on was how different organisms are connected in a food web. The food web activity we did really opened my eyes to see that all organisms are connected in one way or another. In this activity we were given names of organisms and had to connect them in our food web using yarn. Through much trial and error we completed this activity and it was correct! I was able to use this logic for the other activities in the unit.

In English class, I really tried to strengthen my analysis of data and quotes. I worked on this when writing my research paper on the plastic in our ocean. This skill is important to know and to keep improving on because it will let you dive deeper into the text and will make the reader understand why the data piece is relevant to your topic.

In technology I have been using Google Drawing to create sketchnotes of the book The Sixth Extinction. I have loved using this option Google offers because it lets me be creative when analyzing the text. I also love the idea of making sketchnotes because I am a visual learner.

In this Environmental Unit, I have learned so much about the environment and how to maintain and improve it. I have learned new skills that will help me in my future and that will allow me to excel in school.
